Fragment, Gospel of Thomas
What about when wind touches
the body—the surface, outer
border, bark, perimeter, rind, the hide
that holds life in—and makes
the body want to lift the way
the soul (you know) the way
the soul takes wing in the wind.
The body stays on the ground, keeps
walking, lets the arms swing, speeds
up, maybe it breaks into a run, leaps
a ditch edged with litter, trickling
stream of earth-bound rain.
If the body came into being because of the spirit, that
is a wonder. But if the spirit came into being because
of the body, that is a wonder of wonders.
Lost, found
Scraps of papyrus preserved in a dry climate. The problem as much linguistic as religious. Unearthed, 1896. Aramaic Syriac Coptic Hebrew Greek. Our favorite beatific working girl takes the time during a vision to ask
How does one who sees the vision see it—
through the soul, or through the spirit?
The apparition answers
through the mind, which is between the two.
